Why you shouldn't do an SEO Audit?

You have started your website, put a few blog posts to the world and nothing. You have been doing this blogging thing for 5 months now, and you're only getting 50 people to your site a month, and you're wondering what's happening. Well, most people jump straight to getting a website Audit. But the thing is that this is common and contrary to popular belief if normal.

Yes, it would help if you made sure you haven't done anything catastrophic and I will go through that later. But for now, 99% of the time you don't need an audit is because you haven't got enough content on your website to rank.Google runs on trust & authority, and you can prove that you're an authority on a subject by writing about the topic.

Most people may only have a 10-20 page website and are wondering why they aren't getting traffic and need an audit. You want to be aiming for at least 30+ pages before you consider an SEO audit, with a site at least 6 months old.

A few stats to get your head around:

  • 90.63% of pages get no organic search traffic from Google.
  • Only 5.7% of pages will rank in the top 10 search results within a year of publication.

But don't get your head down; this is just a few reasons why you shouldn't worry. Let's go over a few things to put you in the best position to rank your content and website.

On-Page SEO

5 main factors for on-page SEO

  • URL
  • Title
  • H1
  • Keyword density
  • Headings - LSI

So your article will rank for lots of different keywords, but your main seed keyword is what's to be targeted in the 5 areas mentioned above.

Everything is relatively simple. But there are a few rules like in your title you want your main keyword at the start. Plus with keyword density, this can change from keyword to keyword. The best option is to check out the top competitors in Google for that keyword and find out how many times they use it.

You can do this by pressing Command F on a Mac or Control F on Windows, then type in your keyword.

Most of the time, you will find you have used it too many times, and have tried to over optimise your content. Then with your H2's and other headings use LSI's of your keyword. So if your main keyword is a mattress, then use bed in an H2.

If you stick to those tactics, you can't go wrong with your content. Plus you don't want thin or duplicate content on your website so stick to 800 words min of unique content.

Indexation

Next, probably the most important is that you want to make sure your website is indexed in Google.

If you are getting traffic, I would say it's indexed. But to double-check make sure you have submitted your website on Google search console.

You can also perform a site search on Google by typing - inurl:(yoursite)

This will bring up all the results indexed in Google with your domain.

A few final words

I hope this quick and knowledgeable post has helped shine some light on the situation. Concentrate on building pieces of content on the subject and then keep creating the content. Most of the time you aren't ranking is because you don't have enough posts, aim for 30 and your website to be at least 6 months old. If you have hit those benchmarks and you're still not getting people visiting your site, then I would suggest an SEO audit.
